Germany secured their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in Toronto, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Deniz Undav after a fiercely contested Group E encounter.
The result extended Germany’s perfect start to the tournament, but it was far from a comfortable evening for Julian Nagelsmann’s side. Ivory Coast matched the four-time world champions for long periods and looked capable of earning at least a point before Undav struck late.
Here are the player ratings from an entertaining clash.

Germany Player Ratings
Goalkeeper
Manuel Neuer – 5/10
The experienced goalkeeper had a relatively quiet evening but could do little to prevent Ivory Coast’s goal. His distribution remained calm, although Germany looked vulnerable whenever the Africans attacked in transition.
Defenders
Joshua Kimmich – 4/10
A difficult night for the Bayern Munich captain. Diomande repeatedly caused problems down his side, and Kimmich struggled to contain the pace and physicality. His early cross created one opportunity for Kai Havertz, but defensively he never looked fully comfortable.
The Remaining Defence – 6.5/10
Germany’s back line recovered well after falling behind and improved during the second half. While not always convincing under pressure, they limited Ivory Coast’s chances late in the match and remained composed during the closing stages.
Midfield
Germany Midfield – 7/10
The midfield gradually took control after halftime, increasing the tempo and moving the ball more effectively between the lines. Their persistence eventually pushed Ivory Coast deeper, creating the pressure that led to the winning goal.
Attack
Deniz Undav – 8.5/10 ⭐ Man of the Match
Undav once again proved decisive when Germany needed him most. His movement inside the penalty area constantly troubled the Ivorian defence, and his stoppage-time winner secured qualification for the Germans. Another clinical performance from the Stuttgart striker.
Kai Havertz – 7/10
Worked hard throughout the contest and remained involved in Germany’s attacking moves. Although not always clinical, his intelligent movement created space for teammates.
Leroy Sané – 4.5/10
One of Germany’s most disappointing performers. The winger struggled to influence the game, repeatedly losing possession and failing to produce the attacking quality expected from one of the squad’s biggest stars.

Ivory Coast Player Ratings
Goalkeeper
Goalkeeper – 7/10
Produced several important saves that kept Ivory Coast in the contest for long periods. Unfortunately, there was little he could do about Germany’s late winner.
Defence
Ivory Coast Defence – 7/10
Defended with discipline for much of the match and frustrated Germany’s attack during long spells. They eventually cracked under relentless late pressure but delivered an impressive collective performance.
Midfield
Franck Kessie – 8/10
Ivory Coast’s outstanding performer. Kessie dominated midfield battles, broke up attacks and regularly drove his side forward. His leadership and physical presence almost inspired a famous result.
Attack
Diomande – 7.5/10
A constant threat on the flank and comfortably won his duel against Joshua Kimmich. His direct running created numerous dangerous moments and forced Germany’s defence onto the back foot.
The Remaining Attack – 6.5/10
Worked tirelessly throughout the contest and capitalised on Germany’s defensive uncertainty, but lacked the finishing touch needed to secure at least a draw.

Final Verdict
Germany once again demonstrated why tournament football is often decided by fine margins.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side were far from their fluent best, but they found a way to win when it mattered most.
Deniz Undav continued his impressive World Cup form with another decisive contribution, while Franck Kessie was unfortunate to finish on the losing side after delivering one of the finest individual midfield performances of the tournament.
For Germany, qualification is secured.
For Ivory Coast, despite the defeat, the performance showed they remain capable of causing problems for any opponent in their final group-stage match.
